for some time i have had an interest in collecting images of the impromptu roadside memorials that dot our landscape. these memorials stand as anonymous personal reminders of the often untold memory of place. they are lovingly erected by family and friends so that their quiet tragedies will not exit our cultural conscience. during the early spring of 2007 i lost a dear old friend in an automobile accident. over the course of our time together we would drive around the periphery areas where we attended college chatting and making photographs. i have a fond memory of him getting extremely frustrated over a series of fences blocking his view of a bucolic scene. i suggested that perhaps then the photograph he should make was of the fence! after that day he would always include fence-lines in his imagery. i make these photographs in the spirit of my beautiful friend, and the time we shared.
